Nacida en Berlín el 2 de agosto de 1937 y criada en Graz, Janowitz estudió en el Conservatorio de Graz. Herbert von Karajan reconoció pronto su calidad excepcional y la contrató como Barbarina en Le nozze di Figaro en la Staatsoper de Viena en 1959; se convirtió en miembro estable en 1962.

La voz fue inmediatamente distintiva: dorada y clara más que oscura, extraordinariamente homogénea, con un registro agudo flotante y vibrato controlado que podía hacer que las frases sostenidas parecieran casi instrumentales. Esto la hacía ideal para Mozart, Bach, Haydn y las zonas más líricas de Strauss y Wagner.
