SCOPE & CONTENT

This Bard Music Festival volume does not offer a linear Liszt biography. Instead, Gibbs and Gooley assemble essays and historical documents that reconstruct Liszt as virtuoso, composer, conductor, teacher, public intellectual and cultural symbol. The essays place him in Italy, Vienna, Weimar, Rome and Budapest; explore virtuosity, song, symphonic poems, Beethoven commemoration, publishing and religion; and show how his career participated in new nineteenth-century systems of celebrity, concert culture and artistic ideology. The documentary sections reproduce and contextualize contemporary biography, criticism and press reception.

RESEARCH VALUE

The book’s strongest research feature is the dialogue between modern scholarship and primary reception documents. Essays by scholars including Anna Harwell Celenza, Susan Youens, Dana Gooley, Christopher Gibbs, Rainer Kleinertz, James Deaville and Leon Botstein are followed by translated or annotated nineteenth-century material. This structure allows readers to compare Liszt’s self-presentation, contemporary criticism and later scholarly interpretation. It is particularly useful for research on virtuosity, celebrity, nationalism, religion, the New German School and the changing social role of the musician.
