Nacida en Pesaro el 1 de febrero de 1922, Tebaldi estudió en Parma y Pesaro, donde Carmen Melis se convirtió en una maestra decisiva. Arturo Toscanini la eligió para el histórico concierto de reapertura de La Scala en 1946 y pronto se convirtió en una de las grandes sopranos italianas de la posguerra. Carmen Melis modeló una técnica basada en respiración, legato y expansión gradual de una voz fundamentalmente lírica hacia el repertorio spinto. Tebaldi no fue una cantante de coloratura; su arte se centraba en resonancia sostenida y línea.

La consagración simbólica llegó en 1946 cuando Toscanini la eligió para la reapertura de La Scala. El acontecimiento vinculó a la joven soprano con la reconstrucción cultural de la Italia de posguerra.

En La Scala y posteriormente en el Met, papeles como Desdemona, Aida, Violetta, Mimì, Tosca, Butterfly, Manon Lescaut y Adriana Lecouvreur definieron su perfil.
