Nacida en Záhorská Ves el 12 de noviembre de 1939, Popp estudió primero medicina antes de orientarse hacia el teatro y posteriormente el canto en Bratislava. Su formación reveló muy pronto un registro agudo excepcional, coloratura rápida y dicción extraordinariamente clara.

Su consagración internacional llegó casi inmediatamente después de incorporarse a Viena: la Reina de la Noche fue una primera tarjeta de presentación, pero se negó a quedar encerrada en la coloratura extrema. El archivo de la Staatsoper registra 418 representaciones entre 1963 y 1993, con una trayectoria excepcional desde Barbarina, Adele y Olympia hasta Susanna, la Condesa, Fiordiligi, Rosalinde, Arabella y la Mariscala.

Mozart se convirtió en el eje central de su arte. A lo largo de varias décadas atravesó diferentes tipologías vocales mozartianas a medida que maduraba el instrumento, conservando ligereza e inmediatez textual mientras ganaba amplitud y calidez.
